In a desperate attempt to procrastinate, I decided to check out 'The Star Online'... You know, to catch up on the news from back home :p
What was initially expected to be a fruitless conquest turned out to be quite fruitful instead! Came across a report about Chin Peng, the infamous former Secretary-General of the Communist Part of Malaya, which linked to more articles about him and his fight to return to Malaysian soil. See, he is 85 years old and in poor health and currently lives in exile in Thailand (so exciting!) and all he wants is to be allowed to live the final few years of his life in the country he calls home - Malaysia. The Malaysian government isn't allowing this move (as expected). But I think they should just let the old man come home and lift his exile sentence. Like seriously, it's not like he's going to revive the communist party and plot to overthrow the government?!
Anyway, anyone who's interested to read these newspaper articles that I speak of can do so by clicking on the links below:
Chin Peng apologises for death of innocents
So close and yet so far
P.S. how appropriate is it that I'm listening to 'Gai Bian Zi Ji' {Change Me) by Wang Lee Hom right now? :p
Theme: My life; Variations: How it changes on a day to day basis... if at all :p

Swine Flu Bull$#!t
Like SERIOUSLY PEOPLE!!!
This swine flu is practically the same as the normal flu. Just accept it and move on with life. If you get the flu, then all you have to do is take a course of antibiotics, rest, and recover! So what if other people get infected. We don't quarantine people with the regular flu. And that causes more deaths than the swine flu does! Meh.
I think the Malaysian Health Ministry is massively overreacting - closing down schools, quarantining people who've been in contact with infected people, asking students studying in Australia not to return home. But wait, there's more - you could be fined up to RM10,000 or jailed for up to 2 years for withholding health information about yourself... :s
Seriously, I think the resources wasted on all that can and should be used for more important things.
Found these cute little works of art/vandalism in Melbourne. I totally agree with the message that the people who did this were trying to put forth. Basically, there are these cute life-sized sculptures of 3 skinny men in business suits, holding their briefcases and random Melbournians have taken the opportunity to use them as part of their mini awareness-raising campaigns (I once saw them with cigarettes in their o-shaped mouths - so cute!). Here, they are wearing masks. Lol!

Expressions
Isn't it interesting how people express themselves through their msn messenger nicknames or facebook status updates?
The normal ones with no hidden meanings are okay. But the ones that so obviously have hidden messages really catch my attention.
You can tell that some of them are probably too shy to externalise some of their emotions but instead find solace in teasing their friends with intriguing nicknames and status updates. Seriously! There is no better way to pique someone's curiosity than to have something like "can't get you out of my mind" or "primal urges" in your msn nickname. Ok, so people do that all the time. But why??? I keep going around in circles trying to figure this out. If you don't really want people to know about it, why make it so blatantly obvious to everyone? Or does the person obtain satisfaction from the fact that his/her friends know something, but not enough to complicate matters?
Just as of now, I can count more than 10 of my friends who have msn nicknames that have my curiosity at the maximum level. Let's not even talk about facebook statuses (what is the plural for status? Stati? Statae?)
All I have to say is Gah!
But then, I sort of understand where all this is coming from, after all I do it sometimes too. Only mine are more boring than others :p

The Malaysian voters have cast their ballots... I am very excited as to find out how many seats will be won by the Government and how many will be lost to the Opposition. It's weird for me to think that here I am all these miles away from my home country and yet I feel this strong sense of concern as to what is going on there. It's during times like these that I feel a surprisingly strong sense of patriotism for my country. Despite everything that has been happening in Malaysia, I wouldn't call anywhere else home. I am Malaysian through and through :D

The Facebook Phenomenon
I am a self confessed Facebook addict. Everyday when I go online, I open 3 tabs in my browser window - 1 for my email, 1 for Facebook and 1 for general surfing. Shameless, I know :p
I say it is a good way to keep in touch with old friends though some deem it a popularity contest to see who has the most friends and wall posts and gifts. So maybe it is for some people, but certainly not for me!
Its fun to write on peoples walls and to see what people have written on your wall; to tag people in photos and find that you've also been tagged by other people. There are times when I find pictures of me with friends that I didn't even know had been taken. Pleasant surprises!
The only thing I really hated in the beginning was the 'poking' that Facebookers were allowed to do. Of all the lame ideas there are, this has to be the lamest!! The pokes were so dissatisfying (though I must admit that I still do poke people for fun :p). Thank God for SuperPoke!! (do more than plain 'poke', lol)
Oh yes, and there's also the issue about facebook 'stalkers'. Pretty scary stuff if your profile is made visible to anyone. Even for people whose profile is only visible to friends, well lets just say that there's a little bit of a stalking instinct inside everyone... :p
In the end, despite all the drawbacks facebook is known for, I wouldn't be deleting my facebook account anytime in the near (or even distant) future. For me at least, facebook is here to stay!!
NB: I wasn't paid by the facebook people to say this... though I do feel I should be getting some
sort of compensation... *hint, hint*

Why Smoking Is Bad For You
(Totally unrelated to title) A friend pointed out that in one of my earlier posts, I thanked all those who commented on my blog but forgot to thank those who visited my blog but didn't necessarily leave a comment. So here's a big thank you to everyone reading this blog too :D
And to the main point of this post...
Why smoking is bad for you:
- Smoking causes cancer, heart disease and lung disease (OMG!! No way!! *rolls eyes*)
- Passive smoking is bad (really, really bad) for the people around you. So you're not only
shortening your own life span but that of others too.
- Smoking = $$$. Think of all the good things you could do with all that money spent on cigarettes.
That's basically the gist of all the anti-smoking ads and campaigns (except perhaps that last point). Like its going to convince a smoker to stop smoking... I know people who've had diseases caused by smoking and still insist on their daily pack. Why would anyone subject themselves to such a slow and almost always painful death? Self-inflicted too! I don't get it at all.
Its NOT COOL to smoke
People who smoke usually snore because their lungs and throat are so congested with gross things (not cool!!)
Neither is it beneficial to your health...
Addictive maybe, so why do people start smoking in the first place?
If its because of stress, try chewing gum!! Or even minor electrocution... Well basically what I'm trying to say is that there are other alternative stress relieving habits (don't count drugs)
So there, that's me venting out my frustration on this whole matter about smoking and my lack of understanding as to why people choose to start smoking in the first place.
